There is a certain shade of white that only ever appears in advertisements. Real teeth do not come in that color, and when a smile is pushed to it, everyone can tell. Good whitening does the opposite: it lifts years of stain while still looking like it grew in your own mouth.
Why teeth darken in the first place
Two things dull a smile over time. The first is surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco, which sits on the enamel and can be polished and bleached away. The second is the slow darkening of the tooth underneath as enamel thins with age and the yellower layer below begins to show through.
Knowing which one you are dealing with matters, because surface stain responds beautifully to whitening while deeper age-related darkening responds more modestly. We tell you honestly which you have before you spend a cent.

In-office versus take-home
A single in-office whitening session lifts several shades in about an hour under careful supervision, which is ideal before a wedding or a reunion. Custom take-home trays work more gradually over a couple of weeks, on your own schedule, and are gentler on sensitive teeth.
Both use the same active ingredient at professional strength. The difference is pace, not power. Many patients do one in-office session to jump ahead, then keep custom trays to touch up once or twice a year.
The shade that suits your face
We match the target shade to your skin tone, the whites of your eyes, and the color of your other teeth, not to the brightest tab on the shade guide. A shade that flatters one person looks artificial on another, and this is the part a drugstore kit simply cannot do for you.
Our aim is that people notice you look rested and well, without being able to point to why. That is whitening done right.

About the sensitivity
The most common worry we hear is sensitivity, and it is a fair one. Professional whitening can make teeth briefly sensitive to cold, but it is temporary and manageable. We adjust the strength and timing to your teeth, and we build in a desensitizing step for anyone prone to it.
Because we supervise the process, we can dial it back the moment your teeth tell us to, something a one-size box on a shelf will never do.
When whitening is not the answer
Whitening only lifts natural tooth structure. It does nothing for a crown, a veneer, or a tooth-colored filling, which keep their original shade. If a front tooth is darkened from an old injury, or a chip is breaking up the line of your smile, bonding or a veneer is the better tool.
Sometimes the honest answer is that a good cleaning and a modest whitening is all you need, and we will happily talk you out of anything more. We would rather do less and have it age well than more and have it look done.
Keeping the brightness
Whitening is not permanent, but it lasts far longer with a few small habits: rinsing after coffee or wine, keeping up your cleanings, and a periodic touch-up with your trays. Most patients keep a bright, natural smile for a year or more between touch-ups.
If you are curious whether whitening is right for you, mention it at your next visit and we will take a look together, with no pressure and a straight answer.
